Elections

Elections are coordinated with Las Animas County and held as mail ballot elections.

Petitions to seek office will be available in early August.  Any individual seeking election shall appear in person before the City Clerk and sign an affidavit of intent to seek such office.  Regular City elections are held on the first Tuesday in November of odd-numbered years.  The Mayoral and Council Seats are filled by majority popular vote, as all seats are elected at-large.  Council terms are staggered.  The Mayor term is two years; City Council Person terms are four years.

Eligibility requirements to hold municipal office are:

  1. Must be an eligible and registered elector of the municipality;
  2. Must be eighteen (18) years or older on the date of the election;
  3. Must have resided in the municipality for at least twelve (12) consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election.  In the case of annexation, any person who has resided within the territory annexed for the prescribed time shall be deemed to have met the residency requirements for the municipality and precinct to which the territory was annexed;
  4. Must be a citizen of the United States for at least five (5) years.

The next Regular Municipal Election will be in November 2023.
